The Ensemblist is an inside look at the experience of being a Broadway performer- from the first rehearsal through performing eight shows a week and beyond. Whether you’re an experienced theatre professional or a passionate fan, The Ensemblist will give you the opportunity to get to know new performers and the great work they do onstage, while also shedding light on some of the hidden innerworkings of the Broadway experience. Created and hosted by Mo Brady (The Addams Family, SMASH) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Chicago, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), The Ensemblist is the only podcast that shows you Broadway from the inside out.

Matt's Episode: College (or, There's No One Way To Broadway) pt.1 (#55)

Where are you from? Burbank, CA (Los Angeles)

Broadway credits: Les Miserables

How did you hear you’d booked your first Broadway show? I was in my living room with my roommates and we had just made a pact that whomever booked a Broadway show had to buy the apartment a dog… 10 min later I got the call…but I still have yet to get the dog.

What is your favorite event in the Broadway community? I’d say Broadway Barks…everyone is so happy because dogs … And the flea market is so much fun. So much musical theatre nerdage!

What’s something about Broadway that fascinates you? The commitment. Doing a Broadway show is not easy and even when you aren’t doing your “best” show you are still SHOWING UP… The energy and hard work and love that everyone has for their job both onstage and off is unbelievable.

What, other than theatre, has inspired you recently? Concerts and live music… Artists singing their own material. I’ve never written my own music and the passion you see that comes through performing their own material is contagious. (I need to use my keyboard more).

If I could have coffee with any living person, it would be… Steven Spielberg. He’s my idol. His films and life inspire me and I’ve done so much research about him and his filmmaking. Not to mention the scores that go along with his films! It’s fascinating to me to see the progression of his films from mainly science fiction and fantasy films to real life events and his love of children and keeping the imagination alive.

If I could trade places with anybody for a day, I would choose… Jennifer Lawrence. I wanna see what it’s like to be in her shoes and be so “care-free” while being such a bad ass, talented, and uninhibited actor.

To be successful in this business, it takes… Hard work and not comparing yourself to others. Work your ass off and just truly focus on yourself. It’s great to have people you look up to but comparing yourself to someone else in a self-deprecating way isn’t helpful. Focus on yourself in a non-selfish way and just be nice to everyone. Everyone wants you to succeed so do the work to do so.

Tell us a secret. If you see me on the street rocking out I’m most likely playing a John Williams or Michael Giacchino film score.
