The Ensemblist is an inside look at the experience of being a Broadway performer- from the first rehearsal through performing eight shows a week and beyond. Whether you’re an experienced theatre professional or a passionate fan, The Ensemblist will give you the opportunity to get to know new performers and the great work they do onstage, while also shedding light on some of the hidden innerworkings of the Broadway experience. Created and hosted by Mo Brady (The Addams Family, SMASH) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Chicago, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), The Ensemblist is the only podcast that shows you Broadway from the inside out.

Kenita's Episode: Tony Season: for Understudies! (#49)

Where are you from? Rochester, NY

Broadway credits: The Color Purple, Xanadu

How did you hear you’d booked your first Broadway show? I was doing Once On This Island in Sacramento, CA, and was asked to fly back to NY by Telsey and Co. to be seen for the Celie standby in The Color Purple on Broadway. I flew in, had my audition, and just as I walked into my apartment to get my bags to head back to the airport, I received a call informing me that I was being offered the Celie Standby and the a cover position for the sister, Nettie. It was…AMAZING!!!!

What is your favorite event in the Broadway community? I honestly couldn’t pick one. But just to name a few… Broadway Barks…love the pups. Gypsy of The Year… Our community puts on a show for a good cause that never disappoints! And I’ve always enjoyed participating in the Broadway Flea Market!

What’s something about Broadway that fascinates you? It fascinates me that I can still sit in the audience of a Broadway show and feel like I did when I was a little girl. Thrilled at what we as performers do over and over again. We get to give people an escape from reality by embodying other people and their different slices of life. And Broadway gives an artist the highest caliber of performance to strive for.

What, other than theatre, has inspired you recently? Mmmm… Children. There seems to be a lot of children around me lately…and I LOVE it!!! Children remind me of our most authentic creativity. Creativity with no boundaries.

If I could have coffee with any living person, it would be… I’d love to have coffee with Viola Davis!!!!!

If I could trade places with anybody for a day, I would choose… Well…at first I was going to say one of the wealthiest in the world, but i think that would just make me angry to be rich for just one day Lol. So, I would say… I wouldn’t want to trade places with anyone. I’m good with just me.

To be successful in this business, it takes… RESILIENCE!!! And love of ones self.

Tell us a secret. Well, this is just a tiny secret but… I’m terrified of giraffes!
