The Ensemblist is an inside look at the experience of being a Broadway performer- from the first rehearsal through performing eight shows a week and beyond. Whether you’re an experienced theatre professional or a passionate fan, The Ensemblist will give you the opportunity to get to know new performers and the great work they do onstage, while also shedding light on some of the hidden innerworkings of the Broadway experience. Created and hosted by Mo Brady (The Addams Family, SMASH) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Chicago, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), The Ensemblist is the only podcast that shows you Broadway from the inside out.

Tim's Episode: RENT Retrospective (#36)

Where are you from? Minneapolis , MN

Broadway credits: Oh Calcutta, Sally Marr and Her Escorts, starring the late Joan Rivers- I was the composer as well. Jumpers, by Tom Stoppard, of course, Rent, Shrek The Musical, and orchestrations for Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill

How did you hear you’d booked your first Broadway show? I did the last national tour of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas (a hundred years ago), and the director of that was the director of Oh Calcutta since it moved uptown to the Edison Theater. The music director showed up too inebriated one too many times, so he called me to take over…

What is your favorite event in the Broadway community? The Sitzprobe. That magical couple of hours when the orchestra and the cast make music together for the first time…

What’s something about Broadway that fascinates you? The things that many people can do visually, i.e. set and lighting designers, choreographers. I have no visual skills whatsoever, so I’m constantly amazed by that…

What, other than theatre, has inspired you recently? My father, who has lived with cancer for a few years now, and really seeing the man he’s become in his ninth decade. We never stop growing if we remain curious, which he is…

If I could have coffee with any living person, it would be… President Obama. I’ve seen him in person, and I sort of have a man crush on him. He actually glows.

If I could trade places with anybody for a day, I would choose… The drummer, Steve Gadd (assuming he had a gig that day). I’d like to experience making music on that level…

To be successful in this business, it takes… A thick skin, dedication, and hopefully a trust fund…

Tell us a secret. My real name isn’t Tim Weil. It’s Audra McDonald….
