The Ensemblist is an inside look at the experience of being a Broadway performer- from the first rehearsal through performing eight shows a week and beyond. Whether you’re an experienced theatre professional or a passionate fan, The Ensemblist will give you the opportunity to get to know new performers and the great work they do onstage, while also shedding light on some of the hidden innerworkings of the Broadway experience. Created and hosted by Mo Brady (The Addams Family, SMASH) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Chicago, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), The Ensemblist is the only podcast that shows you Broadway from the inside out.

Rashidra's Episode: The Tony Awards (#24)

Where are you from? Virginia Beach, VA

Broadway credits: Avenue Q, Finian’s Rainbow, Hair, Sister Act, Beautiful

How did you hear you’d booked your first Broadway show? The day after my birthday, my agents called and asked if I wanted a birthday present. I’d just moved to the city and thought “Whoa! They’re getting me a present??? That’s awesome!” Instead I said “Sure” and they asked “Well, do you want to do Avenue Q on Broadway? Because you just got an offer!”

What is your favorite event in the Broadway community? Broadway in Bryant Park is pretty fun. I’m excited to experience the Tonys in a normal year- Sister Act was the year Cirque had RCMH [Radio City Music Hall] so we got a smaller scale of the reunion and fun of seeing all your friends in nominated shows. I also really like auditioning. Crazy, I know, but it’s a reunion of its own and, at this stage in the game, we all know it’s only gonna come down to 1 of us so there’s no catiness or pretense. It’s just a fun “hey girl hey,” what I like to call “Black girl reunion."

What’s something about Broadway that fascinates you? Who has the final say in any aspect- casting, the script, costumes, set moves…all of it.

What, other than theatre, has inspired you recently? "Twenty Feet From Stardom.” I don’t have a BFA, I have a BM in music business/management, and being in Beautiful now, so much about that hit home. I’ve written and recorded and have loved doing background vocals for people and always hear “when is your album coming out?” I’ve always had excuses as to “why not,” but it really hit home to make moves to make it happen and stop standing in my own way, in general.

If I could have coffee with any living person, it would be… Ooh good question…. That answer will come with my headshot email. Gotta think about that one.

If I could trade places with anybody for a day, I would choose… I honestly can say no one. I love my life and where I am on my journey. Although I wouldn’t mind trading bank accounts with Beyoncé or Oprah.

To be successful in this business, it takes… A thick skin and a hunger to just do what you love no matter where.

Tell us a secret. I’m a junk food junkie and many times my dressing room mates get mad at the amount of Junior’s Cheesecake, Crumbs, Au Bon Pain, or whoever’s pastries I eat pretty much daily
