The Ensemblist is an inside look at the experience of being a Broadway performer- from the first rehearsal through performing eight shows a week and beyond. Whether you’re an experienced theatre professional or a passionate fan, The Ensemblist will give you the opportunity to get to know new performers and the great work they do onstage, while also shedding light on some of the hidden innerworkings of the Broadway experience. Created and hosted by Mo Brady (The Addams Family, SMASH) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Chicago, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), The Ensemblist is the only podcast that shows you Broadway from the inside out.

Clay's Episode: Swings (#3)

Where are you from? A small town near Rochester, New York.

Broadway credits: Newsies and Matilda The Musical.

How did you hear you’d booked your first Broadway show? I was at home with my boyfriend and sister when I got the call, and I cried the entire phone call. I got the call from my agent on a Monday morning, that I would be signing my first Broadway contract and starting rehearsal later that same day. I called my mom immediately, who was going for a walk around my neighborhood, and told her “YOU NEED TO COME HOME NOW!”  She thought she was walking in a bad part of town. :) I ran barefoot down the street to meet her to tell her the incredible news in person. It was a crazy day, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

What is your favorite event in the Broadway community? The Tony Awards. I’ve watched the Tony Awards ever since I can remember. I had the amazing opportunity to perform in the awards this year! I’ve always dreamed of attending the Tonys, and to perform at them was a seriously unreal experience!

What’s something about Broadway that fascinates you? What I enjoy most is getting to see other theatre. Theatre transports you to a different world. I love that I can be a part of someone’s journey, for those few hours they’re in the theatre.

What, other than theatre, had inspired you recently? The kids in Matilda inspire me tremendously.

If I could have coffee with any living person it would be… Ellen DeGeneres. She never fails to make me laugh. And her passion for equality and being kind to other people is infectious. I also share her love for animals :)

If I could trade places with anybody for a day, I would choose... I would have to pick Neil Patrick Harris, on the day of the TONY Awards!

To be successful in this business, it takes… Hard work, Respect, and Trust. You can never stop learning, so continue to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You never know who you’re going to be working with or for, so be nice to everyone. Trust those around you, and most importantly- trust yourself.

Tell us a secret. I’m really good at puzzles. I love them!
