Today on our blog, we welcome Summer: The Donna Summer Musical's ensemblist Katherine Roarty to Broadway and learn about her journey to the Great White Way:
1. What's your name and hometown?
Katherine Roarty from Pittsburgh, PA
2. What is your role/track in your Broadway debut?
Swing, debut in a spilt track! (I cover 12 ensemble tracks)
3. How did you find out you had booked the part?
It was three days after I got married, I was away with my family and friends on our wedding vacation. I had lost my voice due to the wedding festivities and my boss (Sergio Trujillo) messaged me if I was available to talk. I said that I was, however that my husband had to speak for me if that was alright due to my voice. My boss called and asked if I was available to join the company the following week as an emergency swing. I was extremely excited and nodded my head yes, as my husband confirmed with Sergio. Five days later, I joined the company and made my debut that weekend.
4. What's been the most surprising thing about preparing to perform the show?
My experience has been a different one, in that I am the Assistant Choreographer on the project from La Jolla Playhouse to the Broadway stage. The creative team, stage management and cast trusted me to step in quickly and supported me immediately on and off the stage. I am most surprised by how quickly this opportunity has given a different perspective on the play. From creating the movement to now performing it (in varying tracks), I am honored to work on this project daily with the company that keeps the play alive every night.
5. What are you looking forward to most about your experience on Broadway?
I am excited about so many things! I am excited to become an active member in the Broadway community. I am excited to continue to create authentic work that challenges both audience and actors. But most importantly, I am excited to play every night on the stage with this talented company and the joyful, electric audience that comes to our theater every night.
